How Student Association leaders achieved normalcy — and so much more

Syracuse University’s Student Association was facing a public relations crisis when the 60th Legislative Session ended in May. Former President Eric Evangelista violated SA bylaws and meetings often failed to make quorum. But just halfway through their terms, SA President James Franco and Vice President Angie Pati have changed the game.

Several tangible goals already been checked off SA’s list. A September partnership with Uber granted students $10 ride coupons, Pati headed a successful Mental Health Week in October and Monday’s open forum connected students with administrators. And while some proposals like the Euclid Shuttle haven’t hit the streets yet, there’s a plan of action for each one.

That progress is reflective of the culture this legislative session sought to create from its start.

Franco and Pati’s goals weren’t bogged down with meaningless buzzwords, but rather boiled student life down into action. This focus can be rare for any student organization, and sets an example for SU groups to follow.

Above all, Franco and Pati have made legitimate student concerns the hallmark of their administration. Students have long advocated for better mental health resources and stronger communication with SU administrators. Now, with well-connected and focused SA members on their side, students shouldn’t just be reassured. They should get ready for even more progress.

The Daily Orange Editorial Board serves as the voice of the organization and aims to contribute the perspectives of students to discussions that concern Syracuse University and the greater Syracuse community. The editorial board’s stances are determined by a majority of its members. You can read more about the editorial board here
